Karen Roze
Karen Roze is a Bay Area native who has been in the arts community since the 1980’s. After graduating with a BFA from CCA (California College of Arts (and Crafts)) in 1989, Karen cut her teeth painting murals and doing graphic design and exhibiting her paintings at various galleries in San Francisco, including the Intersection for the Arts and The American Craft and Folk Art Museum at Fort Mason.
In 1992, Karen entered a formal tattoo apprenticeship with Richard Cyr at Picture Machine tattoo in San Francisco. It was here that she was able to learn and glean inspiration from some of the best tattooers in the Bay Area at the time, including Laura Vida, Jef Whitehead, Jamie Trujillo, and from Tattoo City, Ed Hardy, Chris Cohn, and Dan Higgs. She also holds a tattoo license in the state of Hawaii and was fortunate enough to get tattooed by the late Mike Malone in Honolulu, who taught her how to paint tattoo flash and routinely criticized her portfolio as she learned the art of tattooing early in her career.
Karen opened Sacred Rose Tattoo in 1998 with her friend and co worker, Jen Lee who is currently at Tattoo City. Since outgrowing that tiny shop in the Mission district, Sacred Rose moved to a large and open space in Berkeley in 2006 and in 2010 Karen opened the Sacred Rose Tattoo Salon in Albany, providing clients an option for complete privacy, as well as providing on site acupuncture for drug free pain relief for large tattoos. The resident acupuncturist, Naandi Puja Joy also provides cosmetic tattooing and a full menu of acupuncture and health related services.
Karen incorporates her passion and expertise in tattooing with a grounded and calm demeanor, ensuring a comfortable experience. Her intuitive artistic sensibilities will provide the perfect custom artwork for your original ideas. Karen excels in all styles of tattooing including but not limited to Asian bodysuits, traditional, realistic color and black and grey. She is available by appointment only.
